Election Check 24

by Susan Daly, Managing Editor, Journal Media

PA Media has launched a new partnership with The Journal FactCheck, supported by the Google News Initiative, aimed at tackling mis- and disinformation ahead of the Irish General Election.

Election Check 24 is a coalition inviting all participating news partners to receive free ready-to-publish fact-checks in the run-up to the General Election. These fact-checks are being produced by The Journal FactCheck and also the PA News in-house fact-checking team. There is no requirement to be a client of PA News – the objective is to make the content available to all news outlets, regional, national, broadcast, print or online, to reach as wide an audience as possible as the public tries to find quality information that helps them come to a decision on polling day.

PA is also offering participating newsrooms free digital verification training – two-hour sessions for reporters and editors, held remotely by our colleagues at the PA Media Academy between October and December 2024. The training will help to upskill staff and provide the tools they need to identify and combat false information during the election campaigns.

Journalists at news partners will also be invited to join a (free) Slack channel where fact-checkers at The Journal and PA will share their coverage plans, while journalists can suggest potential claims to be checked.
