MLI represented at Joint Oireachtas Committee meeting

For the second time this year, MLI gave evidence to the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport and Media looking at the topic of the State’s response to online disinformation and media/digital literacy, including social media and fake news.

MLI National Coordinator, Martina Chapman, was joined by Shane Murphy from FuJo, Ciarán O’Connor and Aoife Gallagher from the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, and Edel McGinley and Niamh McDonald from the Hope and Courage Collective.

In her opening statement Martina highlighted the role that media literacy has in building resilience to mis- and disinformation, but cautioned that media literacy was not a solution in itself. She also outlined the important work of MLI, pointing to activities such as the Be Media Smart campaign and illustrating the impact that a multi-stakeholder approach can have. Martina also highlighted the need for reliable, well-resourced, cross-sector infrastructure to tackle disinformation.
