MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Susan Daly

Susan Daly is Managing Editor of Journal Media, Ireland’s largest online-only news media publisher. She is responsible for editorial standards and projects across the company’s publications, which include The Journal, investigative platform Noteworthy, sports site The42 and The Journal FactCheck

With an English and French degree and an Education post-grad from UCC, Susan moved into news media while still in college, writing freelance sports reports and a column for the Evening Echo and Examiner. On graduation, she moved to Dublin and joined the Irish Daily Star, spending the next 13 years working in national newspapers, from Day News Editor on the Star to a senior news features writing role on the Irish Independent.

Since 2011, Susan has worked at the coalface of the digital transformation of the news landscape. The Journal was founded in late 2010 as a response to the proliferation of personal digital devices and rise in online access of news and information and Susan became Editor of the publication in 2011, growing its audience from a small start-up community to over 450,000 readers and a leading place in the digital news market over the next decade. She undertook a Punch Sulzberger Fellowship in Columbia University, New York, a challenge-based programme for journalism executives to deliver sustainability and innovation in their organisations.

In late 2019, she assumed the role of Managing Editor of all Journal Media publications to further drive editorial innovation, cross-border journalistic collaborations, and increased audience engagement in the work of all its editorial teams. Among her innovations in Journal Media are the founding of The Journal FactCheck, Ireland’s only internationally-verified fact-checking outlet; co-creation of the crowdsourced and crowdfunded investigative effort Noteworthy; and delivery of The Good Information Project, an ambitious 18-month project to create information ambassadors among audiences on topics that most impact their daily lives.

Susan is a member of the Steering Group of Media Literacy Ireland and sits on the advisory board of FuJo (Institute of Future Media, Democracy and Society) in DCU. She also leads The Journal FactCheck’s participation in the EDMO (European Digital Media Observatory) Ireland hub. She is interested in the power of quality journalism to surface in a fragmented digital world, concerned by the information silos created by algorithms and bad actors and fascinated by the potential of digital users and leaders to connect and work together on these issues.
