EDMO Ireland and Academics for Palestine are hosting a symposium on media narratives about Palestine on Friday, 7 February.
Dr Mike Berry (Cardiff University), co-author of Bad News From Israel (2004) and More Bad News From Israel (2011), will discuss the pioneering work of the Glasgow Media Group, which examined how bias in news coverage leaves audiences confused about the nature of the conflict and the motives of actors.
Dr Wesam Amer (Gaza University & Cambridge University) will discuss his research on the digital communication strategies of Hamas. He will also speak about platforms censoring Palestinians voices. Arwa Mahdawi (The Guardian) will speak about the dehumanisation of Palestinians in contemporary journalism, and Dr Michael Foley (National Union of Journalists, TU Dublin) will speak about attacks on Palestinian journalism. The event will end with a World Café on the theme ‘What can we do?’
All sessions will be held in the John Hand Room of DCU’s All Hallows Campus in Drumcondra.
No registration is required, and people are welcome to join any session from 10 a.m. Please email eileen.culloty@dcu.ie or henry.silke@ul.ie for more information.
