This Month in Media Literacy
As the summer draws to a close, media literacy diaries are starting to fill up for what promises to be a busy autumn. With only three weeks to go until the MLI Awards close for entries, this is your official reminder to not leave it to the last minute! All the info you need is on the MLI website. Other dates for your diary include two AI events from the Adapt Centre and of course make sure to pre-register to secure your seat for the MLI Annual Conference which will take place in The Foundry in Dublin on 4 December.

MLI Awards – The countdown is on!
There are only three weeks to go before the 2024 MLI Awards close for applications. Organisations big and small are invited to apply – from schools, libraries, community groups, to online platforms, broadcasters, commentators and influencers… and everything in between. With five categories there is something for everyone, so do check it out! Please do also help us spread the word about MLI Awards by using the social media supporters pack.

2024 European Parliament Elections: EDMO Task presents Final Report
The EDMO Task Force published its final report, presenting all outputs and outcomes of an intensive and rewarding community-wide effort. Its work was built on the efforts of over 50 independent fact-checking organisations, part of the EDMO fact-checking network, and the 14 EDMO hubs monitoring disinformation at the local and national level.

Grants available for Cross-Border Collaborative Investigations
Free Press Unlimited (FPU) is inviting applications for cross-border collaborative investigative stories. Ten grants of €10,000 each will be awarded to teams of journalists to produce in-depth, impactful investigative journalism that crosses national borders and addresses critical issues affecting European societies. This open call for applications is part of the Collaborative and Investigative Journalism Initiative (CIJI).

Due to a significant increase in the number of invitations for MLI to participate in conferences, deliver talks and provide training, we are investigating the possibility of creating a panel of MLI speakers and trainers from the MLI membership who could, on occasion, be called upon to represent MLI at events and talks. If this sounds like something that you would be interested in being part of, please complete this short expression of interest form.

Are you curious about how Artificial Intelligence is portrayed in the media? Tired of seeing the same sci-fi-inspired images of glowing brains and robots? Now’s your chance to help redefine the visual narrative of AI! Join The Bigger Picture interactive workshops in Cork and Dublin, where the Adapt Centre will explore how AI is currently represented in images, and work together to consider how to truly reflect this technology. iMEdD International Journalism Forum – 26-28, September
This Athens-based global event on press freedom in Europe will look at the role of Artificial Intelligence in investigative journalism, algorithmic accountability, and innovative sustainability schemes for media independence. Explore AI at European Researchers’ Night – 27 September
ExploreAI is an interactive showcase of cutting edge research on artificial intelligence (AI). This family-friendly exhibition will be open to the public for one day only on Friday, 27 September between 4 – 8pm in the Douglas Hyde Gallery in Trinity College Dublin for START: European Researchers’ Night 2024.

Plugged In, Switched Off: Exploring AI with Children and Young People – 15 October
The Barnardos Online Safety Programme annual conference will take place online and live from The Foundry, Dublin. With support from Google.org this will be a solution-based event providing advice for parents, educators and professionals alike. Registration details coming soon.
Global Media and Information Literacy Week 2024 Conference – 30/31 October
This year’s Global Media and Information Literacy Week (GMILW) Conference will be hosted by UNESCO and the Hashemite Kingdom in Amman, Jordan. Under the theme “The New Digital Frontiers of Information: Media and Information Literacy for Public Interest Information”, the event will bring together stakeholders around the globe to explore paths for strengthening collaboration and innovation to power Media and Information Literacy.

Training Series on Election Integrity
Ahead of the European Parliament elections, EDMO launched a training series on election integrity that was attended by over a hundred participants from the fact-checking sector, academia, journalism and civil society. The first training module focused on election integrity on online platforms. The second was aimed at journalists covering the upcoming elections.

This free webinar for adult education tutors discusses the factors involved in triggering fear of technology, and provides useful information on how to approach it, helping students become more familiar with the use of digital technology like tablets or smartphones.
